So y’all I cried like a baby during this movie. No spoilers - just a quick summary so you understand that this is a must see film.
I have been blessed enough to have been raised in an environment where I have not seen friends innocently killed in front of my eyes - but the injustice crimes and shootings against African Americans in the recent years have definitely stuck to me like glue and, the videos I have seen will never go away in my mind. My parents have had many “THE TALKS” with my sister and I - educating us on how the world will treat and see us simply because we were BLACK and WOMEN. <——— Yes. This is indeed a conversational truth that many non African American people have neglected to understand that in the black community these type of conversations with your children are real and crucial.
The Hate U Give is a film that tackles serious issues like racism, police violence, and injustices for African American victims that suffer behind the broken system. A narrative I and many others who look like me are very familiar with.
This story takes you through a teenagers experience of having to exist in two different worlds finding a balance between her life in the predominantly poor black neighborhood where she lives and the predominantly white wealthy prep academy where she attends school. Her uneasy balance between these two worlds take a turn when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Now, she must find her voice and decide to stand up for what's right.
This film will be out in select theaters October 5, 2018 then everywhere October 19, 2018. Take your family and friends and as a community - let us shine light on the stories that go unheard.
I love you!
